Principal Planning Officer Start: ASAP Full-time/ Temporary - 6 Months Working Style: Hybrid (1 day in the office) Salary: £50 - £60 Per hour Location: South Benfleet Our client, is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Principal Planning Officer to join their Development Control team. This is a full-time position, working 37 hours per week, and offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to the delivery of successful growth in one of the strongest economic areas in the country. Key Responsibilities: - Lead the consideration of major and strategic planning applications, including pre- application advice, master plan input, and infrastructure provision- Ensure the best quality of development is secured, meeting planning policy objectives and the needs of the borough- Represent the Council on appeals and manage external appeals teams when required- Attend Committees, including Policy and Scrutiny, and Cabinet- Negotiate, enter into, and manage planning performance agreements- Negotiate Section 106 and other relevant agreements for applications- Commission and manage external advisors to support the consideration of planning applications- Contribute to achieving the council's corporate objectives and priorities- Advise officers, councillors, and members of the public as appropriate- Manage team members and provide support to the development management and planning policy functions Requirements: - Degree related to town-planning or sufficient knowledge and experience in town planning- Full or Licentiate membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute is desirable- Ability to work independently and as part of a team- Strong communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills- Proficiency in IT systems and project management skills- Knowledge of current planning legislation and regulations, local authority governance, and external stakeholders- Commitment to delivering continuous improvement, customer focus, and ensuring diversity and equal opportunities The Council will support officers in applying for RTPI membership and offers a rewarding work environment where you can make a positive contribution to local communities. The successful candidate should be prepared to undertake "out-of-hours" work when necessary, including evening meetings, and must possess a full driving licence and have access to a vehicle.
