Over the past five years, the Ensembl project has witnessed a dramatic growth in the breadth of species and depth of genomic annotations, which are collectively integrated into the Ensembl data stores. With major global biodiversity initiatives and increasing efforts to apply genomics in agriculture to improve productivity and sustainability, coupled with the continued evolution of sequencing technologies, the rate of data growth is expected to continue. To accommodate these burgeoning volumes of genomic data, a new generation of Ensembl browser has been developed, supported by a complex backend infrastructure.We are excited to launch a Team Leader EMBL Faculty position to head the ongoing developments and manage the emerging demands of Ensembl as lead of the Genome Analysis team at EMBL-EBI.Your roleYour primary responsibility will be to lead a multidisciplinary team of approximately 20 staff members, including software developers, bioinformaticians and data curators to build coordinated data infrastructures to service different scientific communities that leverage the underlying Ensembl infrastructure. This may include ‘omic data portals or tracking tools for agriculture and biodiversity.You will work closely with other Team Leaders within the broader Ensembl project, as well as other teams at EMBL-EBI, including our biomolecular data archival resources, to ensure an integrated data presentation, improve efficiency, and produce timely data releases for querying and data retrieval via the Ensembl browser or associated application program interface (API).In your role you will develop a technical knowledge of scientific service software development and a proven ability to strategically coordinate development of complex resources and transition legacy codebases. In particular, you will develop the scientific strategy concerning the genomes, data types and visualisation that are required by the scientific community. This will involve initiating new approaches to how genomic data is co-ordinated and distributed to ensure that Ensembl represents global genomic research efforts. To be successful in this role, you will be required to anticipate future data resource needs of researchers in the field, as well as understand the importance of teamwork and collaboration, and being focused on the delivery of key tasks.Thus, we are looking for a scientist with a passion for open data, who will undertake scientific horizon scanning, strategic thinking, fundraising, and assume a leading role in the engagement and collaboration with a wide variety of stakeholders in Europe and globally.This role reports to the Section Head for Genome Assembly and Annotation, Rob Finn.You have A PhD degree in a relevant field, or equivalent relevant experience.Good understanding of the bioinformatics data landscape, for example, data standards and analysis workflows. Expertise using genomics data, analysis methods, and/or the different types of data that are utilised for genome annotation. This could be demonstrated via research articles, datasets or software products. Project management and staff management experience. This would also include experience in managing software transitions from legacy to adopt more modern approaches. An understanding of agile software development processes. Excellent communication skills – ability to engage within the wider genomics community. Excellent interpersonal skills, with a collaborative spirit. An established profile in the international research community with connections to key players and institutes particularly in the areas of animal agriculture, aquaculture and/or biodiversity. In-depth knowledge of the following: bioinformatics, software engineering, relational databases, data portal development, data standards, genomics, ontologies, functional annotation, and high throughput sequencing analysis; The ambition and drive to develop high-impact data services for the wider research community. You might also have Experience in writing successful grants. Experience in budget management. Familiarity with at least some of the following: workflow managers, data warehousing technology, high- performance computing platforms, data visualisation, curation, statistics, and data mining. A track record in leading scientific projects. Experience designing databases, developing websites and/or working with big data. Participation in multi-institute collaborations. Presented at international meetings. Participation in public-private scientific partnerships Leading Data Coordination Centres Experience leading work packages for complex multi-partner grants and chairing international steering groups and committees on technical and scientific subjects; Apply now! Benefits and Contract Information Financial incentives: depending on circumstances, monthly family/marriage allowance of £260, monthly child allowance of £314 per child. Non resident allowance up to £532 per month.
