Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

Brief Role Description A requirement has arisen for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to work in a team within the Weapons Systems engineering function. Aviation or Aerospace Experience is Must. The Senior Mechanical Engineer will develop and propose Concept Designs as well as supporting resolution of issues for the existing product portfolio as required. Key Responsibilities § Contribute to the planning, control and delivery of projects taking into account risk management, quality and SHE in line with requirements and processes. § Input to cross-functional projects/investigations. § Participate in collaborative ventures at a technical level. § Support the identification of business opportunities and the preparation of bids in area(s) of expertise to facilitate the development of the highest quality bids. § Participate in developing, maintaining and modifying engineering processes and procedures in assigned areas in response to technical developments and operational need. § Manage assigned budgets for own elements of work. § Analysis of customer requirements and their subsequent decomposition into functional system and sub system design requirements. § Prepare specifications and develop designs in line with requirements and all quality and technical standards. § Carry out technical analyses and investigations, including evaluation and selection of technical options, and prepare reports with suggested recommendations to support the resolution of problems and the improvement of engineering capability. § Definition and control of interfaces via interface control drawings and space envelopes. § The generation of design and/or manufacturing detailed design CAD models and drawings. § Undertake the validation of systems/equipment which may include the generation of test schedules, test and integration plans and the writing/investigation of test problem reports. § The generation and review of technical reports § Ensure that designs produced consider the following: · Design safety · Design for Manufacture assembly, dis-assembly and end of life processing (BS8887 (MADE)) · Design to cost, reliability and maintainability § Assist in trade studies and supplier selection, including: · Equipment/supplier surveys and selection. · The generation of system procurement specifications and schedules of work. · Act as a point of contact with customers and/or suppliers in assigned areas on engineering matters, to resolve problems and issues and to maintain an awareness in both parties of priorities and objectives. · Participation in internal and external meetings or design reviews with the customer. Required Key Skills: § 3D CAD (Ideally PTC Creo) experience § Structural / Stress analysis (MS Excel, Mathcad, FEA {PTC Simulate or Ansys}) § Working knowledge of technical office process standards and standard instructions (IBMS and LCM) § Health and Safety awareness, including Product Safety § Working knowledge of drawing standards and the application of geometric tolerances. § Product Lifecycle awareness of the needs of downstream users to maximize the re-use of engineering data and minimize re-work to suit Manufacture and through-life support. § Familiarity with the CAD (CREO), PDM tools (Team Center) and the links to the ERP system (SAP). Qualifications The Senior Mechanical Engineer will have been educated to degree level or equivalent in a relevant discipline with at least 3 years postgraduate experience within an engineering environment.
