The delivery of our DER Management System (DERMS) software products is supported by essential services such as power systems analysis, consultancy assignments and delivery of innovative technology demonstration projects. SGS are seeking to recruit an experienced Senior Smart Grid Consultant to join an existing team of power system consultants. This is an exciting role that will provide exposure to pioneering smart grid demonstration and implementation projects. Overview In this role you will be responsible for leading a range of exciting power systems analysis and consultancy activities in customer projects. The Senior Consultant will often take a leading role in the delivery of projects, responsible for ensuring deliverables are met on-time, on-budget and to customer satisfaction and quality expectations. Assignments involve close collaboration with utility and DER developer customers as Smarter Grid Solutions assess, design and deploy our DERMS platform products. The role will involve close working and collaboration within our team of experienced consultants as well as supporting the development and mentoring of junior colleagues. The Senior Smart Grid Consultant will provide expert input to projects with Developer and Utility customers. The role requires a high degree of adaptability in what is a fast-paced and dynamic working environment, reflecting the varied portfolio of novel and challenging activities undertaken by SGS at the leading edge of smart grid innovation in the power sector. The role will be based in Glasgow on a hybrid basis, with an occasional requirement for travel to customer sites within the UK. Remote working arrangements can be explored. The Role Leading the delivery of power systems analysis studies, using conventional power systems analysis tools and techniques (including PSSE, IPSA, PowerFactory, CYME) alongside bespoke scripted automation tools (Python, DPL). Leading the delivery of consultancy projects including: specification of Use Cases, Requirements and Control Architectures for DERMS and network control solutions; feasibility study for deployment/demonstration of innovative network concepts and methods; cost benefit analysis for smart grid technology roll-out. Leading the delivery of consultancy projects in the distributed energy, Fleet DER and flexibility market domain, including: specification of distributed energy use cases, specification of flexibility and market interfaces, service stacking and coordination assessments, feasibility assessment for deployment and coordination of distributed energy assets, distributed energy cost-benefit analysis. Leading the preparation of, and contributing to clear, articulate and impactful documents for customers and leading engagement with customers in analysis, consultancy and other projects. Peer reviewing the analytical and written work of team members and other colleagues. Market Engagement and Advocacy – Supporting DERMS market growth, accelerating the role of the Distribution System Operator (DSO) in the net zero transition, participating in domain/industry working groups. Contributing to business development: creating and capturing opportunities and supporting the preparation of fully-costed proposals. Supporting internal product development processes by capturing customer requirements as part of business development and project delivery discussions. What we are looking for MSc/MEng or equivalent in Environmental, Energy, Electrical Engineering or similar disciplines (or relevant experience to this level). At least 5 years’ experience delivering power systems analysis or consultancy projects in the power sector or other highly relevant project delivery. Good working knowledge and experience in a variety of power systems modelling, simulation and analysis tools and techniques including uses of commercial software packages (at least one from PSSE, IPSA, PowerFactory or CYME). Experience automating power systems simulations through use of scripting and interfacing languages such as Python or DPL. Strong understanding of recent developments and demonstrations of smart, flexible grid technologies, network operator (utility) operating models and regulatory context of electricity transmission and distribution. Excellent report writing and presentation skills. It would be great if you have… Understanding of emerging industry trends such as the Distribution System Operator transition, grid flexibility services, net zero carbon developments and the Open Networks initiative. Techno-Economic modelling of DER development and operation. Detailed understanding of wholesale and ancillary market participation requirements: registration/eligibility, data exchange, settlement and emerging trends. Development of business models for energy asset participation in energy markets. Experience designing/deploying distributed energy assets at a community, campus or local authority level. Experience supporting the DG/DER development lifecycle process and standards, particularly the connection application process and emerging, innovative solutions. Experience delivering microgrid projects, including feasibility studies, microgrid dynamic analysis and microgrid design activities. Experience in the DER Development Lifecycle: Generator/Battery grid connection assessments, grid connection applications and commercial modelling/study of generator development business cases. About You You will be an experienced power systems engineer or consultant with relevant commercial experience and a track record in delivering high quality technical analysis, qualitative assessments, and innovative projects. You will also be an excellent communicator and initiative taker who achieves high quality outcomes from their own work. We are looking for someone with excellent knowledge of the electrical power industry, experience in the delivery of electrical network modelling and analysis studies and have an understanding of the latest developments in smart grid technologies. You should have knowledge of energy regulation and an understanding of on-going regulatory and policy changes impacting the energy system. Skilled report writing and reviewing skills are essential. Successful candidates will have a strong commitment to personal development and will make and take opportunities to advance their own skills and knowledge, as well as supporting best-practice and growth of others within the team. You will be someone motivated by working in innovative environments, keen to embrace the roll-out and adoption of new grid technologies. The position will be suited to those with experience in the power/energy consultancy sector, or network operator/utility engineers, looking for a new challenge and the opportunity to work on global projects demonstrating and delivering novel smart grid technologies.
